Television

Watching television is a big part of Filipino culture. They open their televisions early in the morning just to watch the news. The only time that they will close it is after they are done watching their favorite soap operas before going to sleep. But not all Filipinos are fond of watching television. My family would just open our televisions for news. Even if they gave me a television in my room, I would just open it if I want to watch the news or if I cannot sleep at night it would be my past time.
What I like about television is that you can learn something from it. Especially if you are watching the news, you could know what is happening outside your place or in different countries. They would give information that you should know to be safe if you are going outside. And I think it is important to know what is happening outside of our house. We can prepare ourselves in case something bad might happen.
It is not that I dislike the other shows, but I just do not feel watching it because sometimes they just waste my time. I have nothing to learn something from them or their stories are just the same that makes it boring especially the soap operas. They make unbelievable stories that does not really happen in real life. It makes the viewers hope high and end up being disappointed.
In general TV shows, some our harming our society and some also have benefits. I believe that what people see on televisions affect their actions. If kids are watching shows that are not yet appropriate to their age, I guess they will somewhat questions it. Another example is if someone has a problem and they saw something bad from TV shows they would more likely to do it also. While on the other hand, people can benefit on watching TV shows. For some people if they have a problem they could just open their televisions and watch some funny shows. That would help them to forget their problems at the moment and just be happy. This may sound funny, but sometimes if I am alone, I open my television not to watch but rather to have a background music. I know some people that watch television because it is their stress reliever. It is one example that you can benefit in watching television.
There may be new high technology gadgets that will come, but television will always be a part of people life. It will always have advantages and disadvantages, but it is about how people would take their actions after watching TV shows. I just watch the shows that I can learn something good as well as shows that make me feel happy. For me, there are some shows that I should avoid and some television shows that I should really watch. I just need to choose what shows I can have benefits and avoid shows that would harm me.

  1. I agree with you, television shows, such as soap operas and reality shows, put a certain expectation on what a person wants to gain in life; however, it is not always possible to fulfill that expectation due to these television shows being scripted or manufactured in order to entertain. In the end, it's like you said, we just need to choose to avoid the misleading examples and choose those that benefit us in some way.

  2. I hope everyone would rather tune in to the news instead. Nowadays, our peers are so uninformed of what is going on around the world.

  3. I believe that the media is controlled to an extent by our government. I see the beneficial factors the news could have on our society to inform us on issues that are impacting our nation and others; however, these news broadcasting channels tend to cover stories such as “Thief cat, who will be his next victim. Tonight at 11” instead of going more in depth of what our government is doing, the Ebola crisis and what is being done and similar or more important matters.

  4. I completely agree with you. Reality tv is a false representation of what life is like.

  5. I partially agree on your statement about the news. My only objection with that is, unfortunately the news is not completely accurate. Depending on which station you watch it can be bias.

  6. I also turn on the tv just to listen to it. I usually listen to something that is familiar or I've watched before.

  7. I never knew people did that too to have the tv as a background filler. It's really nice too. And I agree too that tv could effect someone if they weren't competent on overcoming it.

  8. My family always uses the television as background noise. It drives me bananas because I hate wasting electricity like that. I do agree that all people should learn from the news and know what's going on in the world.
